Studies, Libraries & Built-Ins
Studies, libraries, and family-room built-ins designed to outlast trends and renovations. Millwork-grade casework, integrated lighting, and bookmatched panels — drawn around the room they're meant to live in.
A well-designed library, study, or family-room built-in is not furniture pushed against a wall. It's architecture — drawn to the dimensions of the room, scaled to the ceiling, proportioned to the windows and the door openings on either side. The result is millwork that reads as part of the home rather than an addition to it.
The home office and study has changed in the last decade. We design dedicated, residential-feeling rooms — not extensions of the home itself — with built-in desks, integrated cabinetry, acoustical considerations, and the lighting and detail of a proper library rather than a corporate office.
Family room built-ins are the most-used millwork in most homes. We design them to absorb the visual and physical chaos of family life — books, AV, games, kids' things — and still hold the room together. Hidden door fronts, mixed open-and-closed storage, integrated TV concealment, and finishes chosen for actual living rather than photography.
A library is primarily about books; a study is primarily about work. Most of our projects are hybrids — built-ins that hold books, integrate AV, conceal storage, and provide a working desk surface.
Yes, frequently. Family-room built-ins are the most-used millwork in many homes. We design them to absorb the visual and physical chaos of family life while still holding the room together architecturally.
Walnut and sapele are traditional choices for libraries and bring warmth and presence. Painted hard maple or rift-cut white oak are also common, particularly for more contemporary projects.
